Red rorbu in Henningsvær
Read moreHenningsvær, Nusfjord, Å, Norwegian fishing villages we use instead of Reine, now overrun by cruise ships.
Henningsvær sits on three small islands connected by bridges, once the cod fishing capital of Lofoten.
It's home to Henningsvær Stadion, the football pitch every drone photographer shoots, sitting on rocks above the sea. Hattvika Lodge, where Wanvela bases clients, is a converted rorbu (red fishermen's cabin) at NOK 4,500-7,000 per night.
Nusfjord is a UNESCO-protected village, bought entirely in 1989 to become an "open-air museum." The 30 red wooden houses you see in photos are the original rorbu.
We take clients for boknafisk (Norwegian dried fish) at Karoline Restaurant, chef Lars Olav has been here 20+ years, sourcing from the same harbor as the fishermen out the window.
Å (pronounced "Aw") is the shortest village name in Norway and possibly the world. It sits at the end of the E10 road, past it, the open Atlantic.
The Norwegian Fishing Village Museum here is housed in authentic rorbu, showing the history of klipfisk (dried fish) that Lofoten has exported globally since the 1100s, especially to Portugal and Brazil.
"On aurora night 3, we drove clients from Hattvika up the mountain near Nusfjord. KP 6, clear skies, no light pollution. Green light covered nearly half the sky." - Wanvela trip log, February 2026
