The best window for the northern lights

Aurora Borealis is visible in Norway from late September to early April, but Wanvela's recommended window is January to mid-March. These weeks bring the longest nights, the clearest skies, and the highest chance of sightings.

We've run 14 aurora trips, our statistics show February departures see aurora an average of 5.2 of 7 nights, while November departures average 3.8 of 7.

What the KP index is, and why it matters

The KP index measures geomagnetic activity on a scale from 0 to 9, the higher, the more likely you'll see aurora.

  • KP 0–2 · low activity, only visible inside the Arctic Circle (Lofoten, Tromsø)
  • KP 3–4 · moderate activity, beautifully visible in Northern Norway
  • KP 5+ · geomagnetic storm, visible as far south as Oslo

In Lofoten at Hattvika Lodge, KP 2 is enough to see beautiful aurora on a clear night, because the latitude is 68°N.

Tromsø vs Lofoten - why we chose Lofoten

After years of running Norway trips, Wanvela moved our base from Tromsø to Lofoten in 2024. The reasons:

  • Lofoten · more dramatic landscape, sharp peaks, deep fjords, red fishermen's villages. Aurora over that produces National Geographic-level images.
  • Tromsø · a city of 75,000, convenient as a base, but most aurora shots require a 30–45 minute drive out.

Lofoten is 3 hours of domestic flight from Tromsø, we use SAS or Widerøe from Oslo.

"I saw aurora for the first time at Reine, 22:30, green so bright the surrounding snow turned green. I stood still for four minutes before I remembered I should photograph it." - CAN, field note from February 2024

Best months ranked

  1. February, highest frequency of sightings, longest nights, snow on everything
  2. January, polar night at Lofoten (less than 4 hours of light per day), the most dramatic
  3. March, longer days returning, good for daytime activities too
  4. November, start of the season, mixed rain and snow more common

Wanvela tips

  • Check the aurora forecast three days ahead.
  • If skies are 70%+ clear, go out, regardless of how tired you are.
  • Wait a minimum of 1 hour after sunset before aurora becomes clearly visible.
  • Newer phone cameras handle aurora well, iPhone 14 Pro and up, Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra and up.
