Day 3

Snæfellsnes peninsula full day - "Iceland in miniature"

Morning departure from Reykjavik for the Snæfellsnes peninsula (2.5 hours' drive), nicknamed "Iceland in miniature" because it packs the country's landscapes into one peninsula:

Ingjaldshóll Church, historic church on a hill with views of the Snæfellsjökull glacier
Kirkjufell, the pyramid-shaped peak that appeared in Game of Thrones (the arrowhead), photographed with Kirkjufellsfoss waterfall
Arnarstapi cliffs, dramatic basalt cliffs sculpted by the sea, with the Gatklettur arch
Búðakirkja, the wooden black church standing alone on a lava field, one of Iceland's most photographed landmarks

Evening drive back to Reykjavik and slow night at Hotels Laugavegur.

Day 4

Whale watching morning → Golden Circle → Hotel Geysir

Morning boat from Reykjavik's Old Harbour, a ~3-hour whale watching cruise in Faxaflói Bay (humpback, minke, sometimes orca and dolphin). Sightings happen on roughly 90%+ of departures. Light lunch, then drive the Golden Circle:

Þingvellir National Park, UNESCO World Heritage site, home to the world's oldest parliament, sitting on the rift between the American and Eurasian plates
Geysir geothermal area, origin of the word "geyser"; Strokkur erupts 20–30 m every 5–10 minutes
Gullfoss, the Golden Falls, a two-tier 32-metre cascade with overwhelming spray and rainbows

Evening check-in to Hotel Geysir, walking distance to the geothermal field, so you can watch eruptions at golden hour and dawn without driving.

Day 5

South Coast - Seljalandsfoss, Skógafoss, Reynisfjara, Dyrhólaey, Vík

Skógafoss, a 25 m wide, 60 m high curtain with rainbows on any clear day
Reynisfjara, Iceland's most famous black sand beach with the Reynisdrangar sea stacks offshore
Dyrhólaey, a natural sea-arch promontory; in puffin season (May–Aug) the birds nest here
Vík í Mýrdal, Iceland's southernmost village, its white church on a green hill

Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, turquoise glacial lake studded with floating icebergs; summer Zodiac boat option to weave between them
Diamond Beach, the black sand beach where the icebergs wash back to shore, glittering like cut diamonds
Vestrahorn (Stokksnes), a 454 m jagged mountain rising straight from a black-sand beach, Iceland's most dramatic landscape frame

Evening check-in to Hotel Glacier Lagoon, minutes from Jökulsárlón, so you can walk back for the blue-hour light if conditions cooperate.

★★★★★
"The Snæfellsnes day delivered, Kirkjufell at golden hour, then Búðakirkja, the lone black church on a lava field. Nothing else looks like it. Hotels Laugavegur is right in the centre, we walked to Hallgrímskirkja and dinner without needing the car."

"Day 4 whale watching at sunrise, two humpbacks fully breached, my 9-year-old screamed. Then straight on to the Golden Circle with Strokkur erupting right in front of us. The 6-night pacing is perfect, full but not exhausting."

★★★★★
"Morning at Jökulsárlón, the blue icebergs drifting slowly out to sea, then washed back onto Diamond Beach. An image I'd never seen anywhere else. Closing the trip with an afternoon at Sky Lagoon before the airport, every bit of road tiredness melted in an hour."

FAQ, Iceland

Common questions

Summer or winter, which is better?
Different trips entirely. Summer (May–Aug) brings midnight sun, fully open roads, puffin colonies at Dyrhólaey, wildflowers, and green peaks, the sweet spot for this pacing. Autumn (Sep–Oct) gives shoulder-season colour and first Aurora sightings. Winter (Dec–Mar) brings ice caves and Aurora but some roads close. Wanvela recommends June or July for first-timers, September for shoulder season + first Aurora.
Is the Snæfellsnes day trip worth it, can you really see everything in one day?
Worth it. Snæfellsnes is nicknamed "Iceland in miniature" because the peninsula contains a glacier, lava fields, basalt cliffs, a fjord, a black church, and fishing villages, all in one place. From Reykjavik it's a 2.5-hour drive each way; the full circuit takes about 12 hours and covers Ingjaldshóll, Kirkjufell, Arnarstapi, and Búðakirkja. Want to stay overnight in Snæfellsnes? We can add a night at Hotel Búðir.
Blue Lagoon or Sky Lagoon, which one?
Blue Lagoon is the Iceland landmark, milky-blue silica water in a lava field near Keflavík airport (you can even soak right before flying). Sky Lagoon is newer, in Reykjavik, with North Atlantic views and a 7-step ritual (sauna, body scrub, mist). Wanvela recommends Sky Lagoon for Day 7 (it's in Reykjavik, on the way to the airport hotel), but Blue Lagoon works equally well if you prefer the icon.
Why do we sleep at the airport on the final night?
Most return flights from Iceland leave Keflavík early (6–9 AM). The drive from Reykjavik is 45 minutes plus a winter buffer for snow or storms. Staying near the airport on night 6 means a calm morning instead of a 3 AM departure from town. Wanvela doesn't believe in pre-dawn wake-up calls.
Can we drive the Ring Road ourselves?
You can in summer, but we use a local driver-guide for four reasons: (1) weather changes fast even in summer, and locals read the signals best; (2) you get to look out the window, not focus on the road; (3) guides know photo stops and shortcuts Google Maps misses; (4) it's safer, especially with children in the car.
Can we extend the trip?
Yes, extend to 10–12 nights and add the East Fjords (Seyðisfjörður rainbow street, Stokksnes Vestrahorn) plus the North (Akureyri, Mývatn Nature Baths, Goðafoss) to complete the full Ring Road loop. Or upgrade hotels to Hotel Rangá (glass-igloo Aurora), Hotel Búðir (Snæfellsnes black church), or Deplar Farm (Eleven Experience).
