Switzerland is not a single-season country

Most Thai clients have only seen Switzerland in winter, sold to them as "snow" packages all these years. But Switzerland in summer is a different country, and Wanvela works both seasons.

Summer (June – early September)

This is when seasoned European travelers come.

  • Every hiking trail open, Eiger Trail, Five Lakes Walk at Zermatt
  • Glacier visible at normal range, Aletsch Glacier, Gornergrat view
  • Temperatures 18–25°C in town, 8–15°C on peaks 2,000m+
  • Every cable car running, Jungfraujoch, Matterhorn Glacier Paradise
  • Alpine wildflowers bloom in July

For families with children 6+, summer is the best choice, they can walk, mountain bike, paraglide in Interlaken.

Winter (December – March)

The classic snow season, the package Thai travelers know.

  • Ski season at Zermatt, St. Moritz, Verbier
  • Heavy snowfall in January–February
  • Glacier Express train in snow, the iconic image
  • Temperatures -5 to 3°C in town, -15 to -5°C on peaks
  • Christmas Markets in Lucerne, Basel, Zurich (early December)

Side by side

  • Hotels · Summer 20–30% cheaper; winter peaks at Zermatt and St. Moritz
  • Activities · Summer = hiking, biking, cable car / Winter = ski, sleigh, ice activities
  • Families with young children · Summer is better, no slipping, no cold
  • Honeymoon couples · Both work, winter is more romantic, summer more peaceful
  • Photographers · Summer is more layered / winter is more minimalist beauty
"I went in winter once because everyone says so, then in July, and July ruined winter for me forever." - Khun Wat, returning client, August 2024

Wanvela's 7-night program

We use a hub-and-spoke model, 3 nights in Grindelwald, 3 in Zermatt, 1 in Lucerne, unpacking only twice.

The hotels we use:

  • The Cambrian, Adelboden or Hotel Belvedere, Grindelwald
  • The Omnia, Zermatt, direct Matterhorn view
  • Mandarin Oriental Palace, Lucerne

Months we avoid

  • Late October – mid November · low season, some cable cars closed, mountains not yet under snow
  • Late April – mid May · ski season over, summer not yet begun, mountain trails closed
