Trip at a glance

The journey, day by day

Wanvela's 7-day, 6-night private Yunnan journey leads into a China most travelers never see, a province of high mountains, still lakes and ancient towns. Begin in Kunming, the Spring City, where the air is mild all year. Take the high-speed train to Dali for Erhai Lake and the Golden S Curve viewpoint, then continue to Lijiang, a UNESCO World Heritage old town of cobbled lanes and running streams beneath Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. Stay two nights in Lijiang without repacking, then climb gradually to Shangri-La, Yunnan's Tibetan plateau at roughly 3,200 metres, for Napahai Grassland, Songzanlin Monastery and Dukezong Ancient Town. Best in January–April 2027, when skies are clear and visibility is at its finest. THB 145,000 per person (6 travelers), with a tour leader and photographer throughout.

★★★★★
"I have been to China many times, but Yunnan is nothing like the rest of it — quiet, beautiful, far fewer people than I expected. Two nights in Lijiang was the right call. Waking up to Jade Dragon Snow Mountain from the window, and no repacking."

"Songzanlin in the morning light is the image I keep coming back to — the whole roofline turned gold. Our photographer caught every angle of it. I am still going through the album."

"I was worried about the altitude in Shangri-La, but the route climbs one city at a time, so we adjusted easily. The team checked on us the whole way."

FAQ, China Yunnan

Common questions

When is the best time to go?
This route is designed for January to April 2027, Yunnan's dry season, when skies are clear and visibility over Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and Shangri-La is at its best. Kunming is mild year-round, hence its nickname the Spring City. Dali and Lijiang are warm by day and cool at night. Pack a warm layer for Shangri-La, which sits at roughly 3,200 metres.
How high is Shangri-La, and how should I prepare?
Shangri-La (formerly Zhongdian) sits at roughly 3,200 metres above sea level. The itinerary ascends gradually, from Kunming (about 1,900 m) to Dali (about 2,000 m) to Lijiang (about 2,400 m) before reaching Shangri-La on day 5, so the body adjusts naturally. Rest well, drink plenty of water, and walk slowly on your first day at altitude. The team keeps an eye on how everyone is doing throughout.
How do you travel within Yunnan?
Day 2 is by high-speed train from Kunming to Dali, fast and scenic. From there a private vehicle and driver carry you through Dali, Lijiang and Shangri-La. On the final day you fly from Shangri-La back to Kunming on MU 5940 before connecting home, so you never retrace the route by road.
What is Impression Lijiang?
A large open-air production directed by Zhang Yimou, performed by more than 500 people drawn from Yunnan's local ethnic communities on a stage at roughly 3,100 metres, with the real slopes of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain behind them rather than a painted set. The performance ticket is included on day 4.
Which airline?
Thai Airways, Suvarnabhumi to Kunming on TG 612 (BKK 21:30 → KMG 01:10 the following day), returning on TG 613 (KMG 17:25 → BKK 18:50), plus the domestic leg Shangri-La to Kunming on MU 5940 (DIG 12:55 → KMG 14:45). Airfare is not included in the package; ask us to quote it by cabin class and travel date.
Can the route be extended?
Entirely. Natural additions are Tiger Leaping Gorge between Lijiang and Shangri-La, Meili Snow Mountain at Deqin, or the Yuanyang Rice Terraces south of Kunming. Every part of a Private Trip can be adjusted, hotel upgrades included.
